Imagine the President comes to your town. He pulls up outside of the event location in the luxurious armored limo, steps out, and walks “the line” greeting people, shaking hands, and speaking with the citizens and press that are gathered at the event.
You, however, miss all of this.
You run straight to the driver’s side of the car, and try to speak to limo driver. As he rolls down the window, you ask questions…
“DUDE! That was the best slow-driving I’ve ever seen! The way you turned that corner without ever topping 4 MPH was amazing!!! Hey, what kind of hat are you wearing? Are those driving gloves leather?!? Do you have any tips for me as I drive my car? Are you using 92 octane, or is this thing diesel? Do you ever have a hard time getting the car to go in reverse? I want to drive just like you!”
The problem with this is that while you’ve gotten to know the limo driver and asked him some questions about his job, the President of the United States made himself available to you, and missed it.
Worship Leaders are a LOT like limo drivers.
We live in a strange time where worship leaders get a lot of attention. They play well, sing well, inspire us, lead us in worship, and they are a gift from the Lord. When we see them as the main attraction, though, we miss the entire point.

A good analogy.
However, if that person is aspiring to be the best limo driver he can be, that moment may very well save the presidents life someday as the new limo driver is driving him around. Is being a servant the same thing as worship?
A limo driver who pays constant attention to the president and not the road will likely get a ton of speeding tickets and traffic violations… There is most def a time and place to do one or the other (as in, focus on your craft or focus on God). Of course i happen to believe focusing on my craft bring me closer to God. Ramble ramble…
Jekblad - I think you might be missing my point. In a worship service, when a worship leader is helping us to enter into a time where we are very aware of God’s presence, and God makes Himself evident and available to us……. and we get caught up in studying the worship leader - we miss the entire point.
Great analogy.
Also like the biblical one - friend of the Bridegroom… if the Bridegroom asks us (His friend) to go help his Bride get ready - the last thing we want to do is compete for the attentions & affections of the Bride… that’s not a good friend.
keep going!
WOW!
I think I’ll turn the lights out on stage for some of the worship this weekend. That’s a fantastic analogy.
I guess I should be happier when people really engage in worship but forget who the leader was than when people tell me it was well-done…
Here’s another extension of your analogy. What if I, as the limo driver, are more concerned bout my gloves, my driving, my hat, my outfit, and stuff like that than the fact that I’m driving the president of the US around, and people come up to the window and say, DUDE… do you know who’s in the back of your limo? and I say, what… who cares…
